You will probably be surprised when I tell you this but years ago I was actually a zombie. Now I’m not talking about the kind of zombies you see on popular TV shows or in horror movies. I’m talking about the people who are just walking through life like the living dead. For years I did what most people do – I dragged myself into work everyday, did what I had to do and then made a beeline for the door!
Even though I was good at my job and even received several promotions, I hated every single minute of it. I had a creative spirit and dreaded being chained to a desk everyday.
I lived for the weekends when I could have some free time to de-stress, hang out with friends and enjoy myself. Unfortunately, the weekends went by much too fast and before I knew it Monday was staring me in the face again. I’d often lay awake in bed at night thinking of how I could escape this dreaded cycle. I knew something had to change but I just didn’t know how to even start.
Eventually I left my place of work and bounced around for a few more years trying to find the right fit. I kept hoping for that Goldilocks moment of something being “just right” but it never happened. I had always believed everyone has that little voice inside of themselves that acts as a compass but I sure as hell hadn’t been listening to it! I decided it was time to take out the headphones and start listening up.
When I got really clear on what I wanted I knew it was to be my own boss.
It was an exciting revelation but also a scary one because my husband and I had just found we were going to have a baby in nine short months! Not exactly the ideal time to dive into entrepreneurship, but I knew if I put my heart and soul into something I could make it happen.
I took a leap of faith and went ahead with my plans to start a dog walking business. I knew nothing about running a business but I also knew listening to that little voice would show me the way. I followed my heart and my new endeavor quickly became a successful six figure business! While I was overjoyed at the level of success I had achieved I was also overwhelmed. I had a new baby, hundreds of clients and a team of dog walkers to manage.
Things quickly began to take a toll on me. While I loved that I had created a business and could be my own boss, my work/life balance was awful. No time was sacred or off limits for me – it didn’t matter if it was 10:00 at night, if I was at family member’s birthday or even at a funeral! That phone was strapped to my hip and if there was an issue I had to deal with it.
I remember one time in particular I got really sick and felt like I was going to die. I was just lying in bed crying answering email after email from clients. Then one of the dog walkers that worked for me called about an issue and I actually had to yell “hold on!” as I made a run for the bathroom to vomit. Not a pretty picture. I realized in that moment I wasn’t running my business, my business was running me (straight into the ground!) After some soul searching I knew it was time to make some changes.
Even though having a six figure business was amazing, I knew in my heart being the owner of a dog walking company was not my true calling.
When I took some time to reflect on what my true purpose was I realized the answer had been there all along. It was so simple yet it hit me like a lightening bolt – I was meant to be a coach. In fact, I had been coaching most of my life without even realizing it. I had long been the go-to person when someone had an issue or problem. I was the one friends, family and coworkers would turn to for a compassionate ear or to help them find the solutions they couldn’t quite figure out on their own. Even people I hardly knew seemed to gravitate toward me and within minutes of talking they would tell me personal things even the people closest to them didn’t know.
Coaching was my calling and I knew it with every fiber of my being. So with my head held high I sold my pet sitting company of eight years. Even though my experience with that business wasn’t exactly all roses I learned so much from it. I learned how to create an incredibly successful business but I also learned the importance of setting boundaries and even that it’s okay to sometimes say no.
The knowledge I gained from the whole experience was invaluable and I wouldn’t change a thing. I am so grateful that as a coach I get to share my knowledge and passion for business with budding entrepreneurs just like you. I will guide you every step of the way on how to find your purpose, have faith in your dream and put a plan into action! You truly can have an amazing business and an amazing life at the same time.
